TEHRAN PAPERS

America cannot make a mistake and expect compensation from Iran

January 14, 2024 - 22:51

TEHRAN - In a commentary, Kayhan discussed the effective role of Iran in the developments in the region and wrote: The English TV channel Sky News has emphasized that Iran plays an effective role in strengthening the resistance groups in the region, but it is not their owner and puppeteer, and if the actions of the United States lead to the spread of war in the region, Iran cannot prevent the war of those groups against America.

Also, according to an official of the Biden administration, Iran is a supporter of the Houthis and has participated in their attacks. But the Americans know that Iranian proxies in West Asia are not puppets. It must be said that the longer the conflicts in Gaza continue and expand, the less it will be possible to exert control. The important point is that although Iran does not seek to escalate the regional war, it cannot reduce the possible calculations in Lebanon, Yemen, or Iraq, because they are acting more and more independently; if the miscalculations of the U.S. and Israel lead to a conflict, Iran will not seek to stop it, because such a conflict will quickly emerge for them.

Shargh: America does not want a confrontation with Iran

In a note, Shargh discussed the increase in tension in the Red Sea and said: U.S. President Joe Biden called Yemen's Ansarullah a "terrorist organization" and threatened that if Yemen's attacks in the Red Sea continue, the U.S. will continue with similar attacks. As the atmosphere of tension in the region intensifies, anti-Iranian literature and baseless accusations also become bolder but even though Biden's rhetoric has been harsh, he is also seeking to adopt positions to manage the atmosphere of tension; so, along with baseless accusations against Tehran, it is clearly emphasized that the United States is not looking for direct tension with Iran. According to what was said, after the joint attacks with Britain on Yemen on Friday morning, the American president said that he does not believe that his country is in a proxy war with Iran and Iran does not want a war with us. Therefore, instead of a military attack on Yemen, the White House should pay attention to immediately stopping the comprehensive military and security cooperation with Tel Aviv against the people of Gaza and the West Bank so that security returns to the entire region.

Hamshahri: Iran's self-restraint regarding non-expansion of war is not permanent

In an analysis, Hamshahri discussed the attacks on Israel and America as well as Iran's self-restraint. It wrote: The American newspaper New York Times believes that although Iran has shown self-restraint so far in order not to spread war in the region, there is no guarantee for the continuation of that self-restraint due to the actions of the United States. Hugh Lovett, a West Asia expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations, believes that this is a regional war that is no longer limited to Gaza but has also reached Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. By bringing aircraft carriers to the region after the start of the war in Gaza, Washington wanted to show that it was ready to prevent Iran's proactive actions, but these positions made America more involved in the conflict. On the other hand, Israel has intensified its attacks against Iran's proxy forces, especially in Lebanon and Syria. The leaders of Iran and Hezbollah say that they are not looking for war, but Israel could not predict the attack by Hamas before October 7 due to a miscalculation, and for this reason, we should not be sure that Tehran and Hezbollah will not enter into a wider war.

Ham Mihan: The sensitive conditions of the region
In an article, Ham Mihan discussed the positions of Iran and Saudi Arabia towards each other and said: Iran and Saudi Arabia normalized their relations in the past year with Chinese mediation. But the fact is that there is still an atmosphere of mistrust and caution in the relations between the two countries. Saudi Arabia believes that Iran will continue to maintain its relationship with the forces under its support and the Houthis are one of the most important intended players of Iran in this strategy. However, Saudi Arabia has decided to avoid getting involved and asked America to avoid conflict with the Houthis. The Houthis know very well that America has interests in expanding the scope of the war in the region; therefore, they plan to use this leverage to develop their capabilities to become an important factor in the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea. The fact is that there is a potential to expand the range of conflicts between the U.S. and the Yemeni Houthis, but it is unlikely that Iran will be engaged in this story.
